Serial killer drama Dexter is coming back to TV - here’s everything we know so far

Popular TV serial killer drama Dexter is to return for a new season, after last airing seven years ago. The show ran on the US Showtime channel from 2006 to 2013, but will now return for a one-off 10 part series, with Michael C Hall returning as the titular character. When will Dexter return? Production on the new season of Dexter is scheduled to begin in early 2021, with the show likely to be broadcast in autumn of the same year. However, it’s not yet known which broadcaster in the UK will broadcast the programme. Gary Levine, president of entertainment at Showtime Entertainment, said in a statement, “Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago. "We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. "Well, I am happy to report that (executive producer) Clyde Phillips and Michael C Hall have found it." Who will star in the cast? Michael C Hall will return to his role of Dexter Morgan - a forensic blood spatter analyst who works with police, but is also a serial killer. However, it’s not yet known if the show’s other main characters will be involved in the newest season. What will the storylines be in the new season? Storylines for the latest instalment have not yet been revealed, and it remains unknown if the new series will pick up where the last season left off or not. What happened at the end of the last season? At the end of the last series of Dexter, which aired in 2013 and was the eighth season of the show, the serial killer switched off his sister's life support machine before throwing her body in the sea and then sailing off into a hurricane. After faking his own death, the end of the episode then showed Dexter working as a lumberjack in Oregon. However, the ending of the last series disappointed some fans of the show at the time, as many felt that the way the programme finished was out of character for Dexter. After the eighth season of the show had ended, Michael C Hall told IGN, "I honestly find it to be a pretty dark ending, and I think it upset a lot of people. "Certainly, the shakiness of certain aspects of the eighth season maybe made that ending less palatable to people. "I don't think people were ready to be told that, because they were already feeling a sense of ambivalence for the show. But the idea that he imprisons himself in a prison of his own making I think is fitting [for the character]." After the final episode had aired, showrunner, Scott Buck, told Entertainment Weekly, "Even if I don’t write an episode, I’m still in charge. I take full responsibility. We all work cohesively as a team. "If people think the final episode stood out, it’s probably because it’s been sitting in my mind for so long. It’s a difficult question to answer."
