THE first room has been completed at the Midland Hotel and our reporter GREG LAMBERT went along to take a sneak peek. It's fair to say he was impressed.
MY first thought on entering the Midland's 'concept room' was - wow!
The room is just a prototype at this stage and changes will be made before the hotel opens and the first guest gets to sleep there. But if all the rooms end up being as stylish as this one then staying at the Midland will be a pleasurable experience indeed.
Although I'm no Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and not exactly an interior design expert, I was very impressed by the lay-out.
The pale decor, curtains, bed linen and carpets gave the room a relaxed, airy and spacious feel. They contrasted perfectly with the darker, wooden unit that opens up to reveal a television set, tea making and storage facilities.
The bathroom is actually built in to the back of this unit, an extremely clever twist on the 'en suite' concept that makes the most of the available space and makes the room feel almost 'space age'.
There are one or two other unusual features, such as the futuristic wall calendar and the coat rack in the shape of a tree.
And of course, the stunning bay view out of the window will take your breath away.
Urban Splash is already taking expressions of interest from people who want to stay in the hotel when it opens. Judging by the quality of this concept room, I'm sure that list will be a lengthy one.
